Occasionally among all the hype and dross in my email is a gem and this year’s Thomson and Morgan’s Chelsea Flower Show special offer is, in my opinion, one such gem.
Costing only £9.99, it is, purportedly, worth £57 (and who am I to dispute this). For this price, you get 15 plants, which I will talk about in a moment, and Gift token from T & M for £10 and an RHS Chealsea Flower Show DVD.

Knowing the Basics of Garden Pond Care

Garden Pond Care
If asked to name a miracle of creation, would you choose the lowly carp? Probably not. Most people think of carp as ugly, greenish-brown fish that live in the mud and dirty up the water for other fish. Yet, carp are also among the most beautiful and highly desired fish known to man. Raised primarily in Japan, these carp can be mixtures of red, yellow, blue, black, gold, silver or other colors. They are often found in small ponds near Japanese homes where they are admired by all, loved as pets and even exhibited in “beauty contests.”

Keeping you pond water clear and bright
March 31st, 2010 — Pond
Keeping your pond healthy is an ongoing problem.
Most ponds suffer from minor problems from time to time and over the past year or three, a number of solutions have come on the market.
First, green water. This is due to too much algae in the water.
The second problem is getting enough oxygen in the water during hot, sunny weather.
The third problem is sludge at the bottom of your pond.
A Pond in your garden
March 25th, 2010 — Pond
Water in your garden adds a whole new dimension to the pleasure you derive from it. You can grow a number of plants which you would not otherwise be able to cultivate and the wildlife it attracts is endlessly fascinating. If you have moving water, the sound and look is very soothing.
If you do not have a stream in your garden (and most of us don’t), then the alternative it to build your own water feature. This could be a man-made stream or rill or a pond with, perhaps a water fall.
Mantis Rotovators take the pain out of gardening
March 15th, 2010 — Gardening Tools
When I first started gardening a large field (8 acres) in my old house, I hired a cultivator to turn over the grass and dig a patch of it. It was very heavy and hard to control and use and I never used one again – it seemed easier to dig it be hand!
However, I have just received information about the Mantis Cultivator which looks as though it might be the answer for anybody who needs to dig their soil regularly but either has not the time or has back or knee problems – or simply doesn’t like digging.
Easton Walled Garden
February 21st, 2010 — Open Gardens
On Friday, I went to see the Snowdrop Walk at Easton walled Garden. I find it very interesting to look at other people’s gardens and often get ideas and inspiration for my own patch. I buy a copy of The Yellow Book
every year and often use it to visit the listed gardens that are local to me.
Choosing Gardening Tools – Rakes and Hoes
February 7th, 2010 — Gardening Tools
The are basically two different types of garden rake, used for different purposes. Those which look like a strip of metal with nails driven into them tend to be dificult to use – avoid them! Rakes with more than twelve tines are also hard to use (unless your very strong.) As with all garden tools, try to buy the best you can afford. A good rake will last much longer than a cheap one. The tines will not break off or bend.
Choosing the right gardening tools – Spade and Fork
February 6th, 2010 — Gardening Tools
If you are new to gardening, you can easily spend hundreds of pounds on a complete set of new gardening tools. However, you can just as easily choose the basic tools to buy and spend relatively little money. Bear in mind, though, that you should always buy the best tool you can afford. Cheap tools do not last and you will have to spend more money replacing them in short order. Worse, they will make your work harder. So, if you are on a tight budget, buy one good tool at a time rather than a range of poorer quality tools.
